This holds true for any small group, be it in R&D, or in a very structured and mature support and operations environment. Different categories of software engineers (as observed in a typical software lifecycle chain: consulting, R&D, projects, implementation, support) have very different cultures and should therefore be lead, motivated and managed differently. By applying the correct processes to every section of the lifecycle, while fostering specialization in specific areas, increases in quality and efficiency unfold, which cannot be duplicated by any amount of un-coordinated and un-managed effort. Many software products start off as small pet projects that evolve as they are repeatedly used in different application areas. Leverage is therefore achieved as similar projects benefit from the component re-use-ability. Typically small projects are done by business experts (remember the personal access database?) however, as maturity increases and the footprint becomes wider (with application in other business areas), the requirement for increasing maturity must be recognized, and be managed accordingly. Structure and governance within an organization need to be adaptable, and modified on the fly. An emphasis is therefore placed on communicating personal and group accountabilities in a transparent manner in writing, eliminating potential problems from falling between the cracks. UtiliWorx strives to maintain excellent relationships with its key business partners, and will therefore at all times strive to have experts available in all related specific areas of business. Even though UtiliWorx is strictly speaking an IT company, the intention is not to solve IT problems, but to solve real business problems, using IT as a tool. A key factor to success is to continually foster research and to encourage individuals to grow personally, which in turn leads to additional spare capacity being created. UtiliWorx therefore believes that to create additional capacity, people need to be given free time to invest in themselves. From a management perspective this means that not everybody must be pushed as hard as they can, and not everybody should be stretched to the limits all of the time, as the inefficiencies in such an environment simply grow on themselves. With a company-wide investment in terms of personal free time, the benefits are astounding. Unrealistic growth aspirations and financial performance pressures lead to over-extension of individuals, which ultimately lead to the deployment of the wrong people to perform the wrong tasks.
