He is also an accredited public examinations marker. At our Midrand school we take a unique approach to education seeking to engage both halves of the brain in as balanced a manner as possible. We bring the two halves of the brain into play simulteously by adding to the curriculum computer literacy, abacus maths (both compulsory) and chess (optional). Abacus maths is a compulsory subject which is taught in two lessons per week. This training dramatically improves your child's numerousy, arithmetic, mathematics and brain development by fully exercising both sides of the brain simultaneously. We follow the training techniques developed by AbacusMaths and our teachers are expected to score a minimum of 95% in all of their exams. As adults, we already rely heavily on our computer skills through almost all walks of life. By the time our children become adults, they will be even more dependent upon computers than we are today. We at Gallagher Combined School recognise this and believe that it is essential that they be fully prepared for this changing world. Our children learn to use computers the way they will use them in future, employing all of the many computer resources available, with computer literate teachers to guide and assist them so that as they progress they become more and more computer literate. All homework is manual so that our learners' writing and creative skills are not neglected. Yes, our children work hard at Gallagher, but they love every minute! As they progress though the grades, they develop problem solving skills involving these steps - Identify and understand the problem (a critical skill in life and examinations) Research relevant information (understanding what is relevant and how to find it) Discuss with others (interaction, debating skills, learning to listen to others) Children need to play in order to develop their physical skills and to learn to love and care for their bodies. For this reason, we offer the following extra-mural activities, some of which are subsidised by the school - Chess Just as abacus maths develops both sides of the brain simultaneously, so too does chess. For this reason, we encourage all of our learners to play.
