From the announcement of the date earlier this year to the outstanding media launch some weeks back, it was clear that this show was going to be a significant success. In addition, this year the weather was perfect for an airshow, sunny blue skies with hardly any wind. Media Boss, Mark Mansfield had registered more media organisations and individual media people than at any previous aviation event of its type in the history of South Africa. Congratulations go to Mark for his passion for aviation and getting things right. As media representatives, we were provided with several high-level platforms from which to take photographs and action videos. Two very large grandstands had been erected with ample open areas for the considerable audience to seat itself. Due to the sheer size of Wonderboom airfield, the lay out for vendors, sponsors and many vehicle exhibitors was well thought out, allowing plenty of open space for spectators to wander amongst the exhibits. All of this contributed towards a happy atmosphere filled with electric expectation as the action-packed airshow and car show displays linked into the considerable programme. A whole slew of dignitaries and military attachés, as well as delegations from the Angolan and Nigerian Air Forces including the chief of each air force gathered in the early winter afternoon as the SAAF settled down to business. This is to maximise the benefits of the exercise and ensure inter-operability between the various arms of the SANDF. Gen. Msimang also paid tribute to the soldiers who are deployed on peace keeping missions on the African continent as well as those who paid the ultimate price in serving their country. The South African Power Flying Association (SAPFA) will need to ask some serious questions about the disappointing number of aircraft that entered this year’s PTAR as well as the use of Springs airfield that was chosen to host the event. Being so close to the most congested airspace on the African continent adjacent to OR Tambo International Airport, Springs was not a good choice. With only 62 entries on the first day and at least five of those lost on the second day, this field was one of the poorest in recent years. Unfortunately, the Friday claimed two out landings as precautionary and the entrant who won in Bethlehem last year experienced an engine failure, but with Springs in sight he executed a safe landing. However, one aircraft crashed against the side of a mountain in the vicinity of Wakkerstroom, but we are happy to report that both pilot and navigator were rescued and after brief hospitalisation they were fine. Wits University Aeronautical engineering department was approached to devise this theoretical formula, which is based on the three-dimensional distance flown under the race day atmospheric conditions and based on historic races flown by individual race aircraft. As a young man, Lindbergh became interested in aviation and funded his flying lessons by working as an aircraft mechanic and as an airshow wing walker. All well-composed, high quality photographs with an aviation theme will be considered. Each month, the relevant photographer will receive a two-night stay at the Aviator Hotel. By submitting a photograph, you grant us the permission to publish the image in African Pilot Magazine, as well as our annual executive wall calendar.
